Ogale, Director, Research Institute for Sustainable Energy (RISE), TCG-CREST, Ko l ka t a , and Honora r y Pro fessor Emeritus, IISER, Pune. In his talk, Professor Ogale highlighted that energy, environment, and health are the most concerning topics for the world at this time, given their direct i mp l i c a t i o n s f o r t h e l o n g - t e rm sustainability of the civilisation on this planet. The three topics are not only intertwined with one another in very c omp l ex wa y s bu t a l s o ha v e an intrinsically global character in terms of their canvas and connectivity. These three topics involve all the elements of the social fabric in uniquely intriguing ways, posing huge challenges that The lecture ended with a lively discussion with the audience, and questions were taken online over YouTube and passed on to the speaker. H i gh l i gh t i ng t he scena r i o f r om t he perspective of energy or rather clean energy, Pro f esso r Oga l e emphas i sed how a progressive and speedy move towards enhanced use of clean energy could alleviate some if not all, the problems we might face regarding long-term sustainability. He argued that innovations in all sectors, namely science, technology, and social science, are key. However, they need to be within the realms of pragmatismand practicality. are highly complex to address in synergistic ways , l e t a l one so l v i ng them i n the foreseeable future. Professor Ogale said that although everyone appeared to acknowledge their existence and agree to their resolution, these matters still need to attract the rightly deserved attention and action on the required scale. The interesting talk included several examples the audience could relate to, and the speaker provided details of ongoing projects, such as solar desalination, water decontamination, energy storage and lighting, solar cells, batteries, carbon dioxide reduction, and clean fuel on which he and his teamwereworking.
